OLLI-at-UVa Online Courses
A NEW ONLINE COURSE
ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES
As a further trial of online courses OLLI at UVa is initiating a second course; this one on alternative energy sources. This will be an interactive process in which the moderator (Mitch Sams) poses questions to be answered by students. For example, the first question might be simply to list one or more energy sources other than hydrocarbon fuels. Follow-up questions would be to list the pros and cons of each source. This is similar to what Mitch has done in the Discussion Groups for OLLI at UVa.
To take this course you must be an active member of OLLI at UVa who has paid the fee to take OLLI-at-UVa courses in the current semester. Then all you need do is send your e-mail address to Mitch Sams at olliuva@comcast.net who will add it to the course so that you may then apply for a password to enter the Collab site where the course will be posted. Further instructions will be given to you at that time.

OLLI-BeSmart - Nutrition and Fitness
Concepts & Controversies
Syllabus | Course Announcements
Did you know that Thomas Jefferson chose a healthful diet that included lots of fruits and vegetables and limited quantities of meat?
"I have lived temperately, eating little animal food, and that not as an aliment, so much as a condiment for the vegetables which constitute my principal diet." (TJ to Dr. Vine Utley, 21 March 1819)
Now there is a lot of current research which makes that a smart choice!
OLLI-BeSmart is an online course beginning in Spring 2008. This pilot online course will give OLLI-UVa members a chance to experience an asynchronous online course and to investigate all of the commonly used online course tools as they explore and discuss current research in the areas of nutrition and fitness.
- Students use the online companion site provided by the publisher of the textbook to complete Internet assignments.
- A threaded online discussion is keyed to chapters in the textbook.
- A weekly online chat session is scheduled to allow students to interact with the instructor and with other students in real-time.
- Students collect favorite healthful recipes and add them to a Cookbook Wiki. Students are also asked to map favorite walks or runs and add them with descriptions and helpful information to a Fitness Wiki.
- Students use DietAnalysis+ software to record foods eaten and to check calories as well as vitamins and other nutrients.
You may start at any time. This is a course which comes to you when you want it and that you may pursue at your leisure! There is no fee for this course, nor does it count against your selected hours, but you MUST be a member of OLLI-UVa in order to take part. If you are interested in enrolling or have any questions, please send an email message to olliuva@virginia.edu.
